My son went out with the boat and had problems with water coming in boat and the GT150:eek: got submerge in the water before I could get to them. I got the water out of the boat, now, what do I need to do to the engine before starting it? I sure I'll need to get the gas out of the tank, but, what about the engine itself what needs' to be done to it? Thanks and God bless all.

Re: Engine got submerge, help please!!!

A motor lost overboard in fresh water can usually be safely started if recovered within twelve hours providing no sand or silt is present. Remove the plugs, power pack covers and gaskets. Clean and dry. Remove the carb orifice screws. Drain all fuel lines and tank. Spin the flywheel using emergency pull rope until all water present has been expelled. Squirt outboard lube into spark plug holes. Reassemble and now start.

If sand has entered the engine, dont start it.

Ok it ws late when I got to the boat, yesterday event and the engine was not all the way submerged in the water. I bump the water out of the boat and beached it until I can find out where the water is getting in at. I'm going to try and get it back onto the trailer this morning. I'll not going to try and started it to day. Keep the suggestion coming, this has been a good motor so far. Thanks to all and may God bless you all.

You must get the water out of the cylinders Now! Do all as recommended, then lube the cylinders, crank it over to coat them, and start, & run it to operating temp, as long as you can, intially, as soon as possible! Next, putting it back in service afterward, & running it for a good while is the best thing. Time is of the essence, or your motor is toast!

Agreeing it is absolutely essential that you get that motor running immediatly. Even if you have to stay up all night. Or take it to somebody qualified to do it. Otherwise, just put it out at the curb for the trash pickup.

Re: Engine got submerge, help please!!!

Getting the water out of the cylinders is no big deal. Where you want no water is in the bearings in the crankcase. That is a little trickier. Most of the water will drain/flush out/fling out of upper cranckshaft and con rod bearings. Water in the piston pin and bottom crankshaft bearings is a bit mor difficult to remove. Water trapped in these, even if only a drop will eventually cause etching to occur. Pouring copious amounts of gas/oil into the spark plug holes isn't going to do much. Engine tuner does emulsify with water. Lots of it, spray in the intake, or thru the carbs if they weren't removed for cleaning, rotating the engine many times with the rope and rotating the entire outboard over to get the cleaner to exit the crankcase thru the intake ports then the spark plug holes. Do this a few times then flush with gas/oil.

Was not running when it went under. My son call me about 5:30 p.m. and said boat was getting full of water. When I got to the boat Friday at about 7:30 p.m. , the boat was out in about 4ft. of water and the back of the boat was under water:eek:, with the hood of the engine under about 6in. above the base of the engine:(. Pump wire in boat had short out and I fix it and pump water out of boat, we then beached the boat in about a foot of water because it was night. When, we got back to the boat Sat. morning I checked under hood and seen very little signs of water and no sand or slit. Got it home late Sat. afternoon, I plan on taking it to service dept. Monday morning and get it check out. God bless all and thank you for your help.;)

If the engine can not be started or taken apart immediately, it should be reimersed in cold fresh water. Adding ice to the water helps. Only the power head has to be kept submerged, so standing it on its head in a barrel would be fine.

Listen to these guys! that motor needs to be running like yessterday, to dry things out and relubed. Think of those berring journals and crank sharf polished areas like a brake rotor, shiny after your driving it and then you get a light sprinkle of rain, that just a few drops get on the rotors, rain ends 2 hours later you come out to go somewhere and see reddish, yellow rust spots all over your rotors, and that is just splashing on them! Now think about your motors internals, all those polished surfaces now look like your brake rotors after a day of rain! GET IT STARTED WITH LOTS OF OIL. It may still run after the dealer get is monday, wont be cheap and it will have the eqavilent of lots of wear on it.

OK, just finished running the engine for about 10 min.. I done has many of you suggested drain water and "Remove the carb orifice screws. Spin the flywheel using emergency pull rope until all water present has been expelled. Squirt outboard lube into spark plug holes. Reassemble and now start. Now I plan to take her in and have it servised and have carb clean out good. Again thank you all and may God bless.

Re: Engine got submerge, help please!!!

Ya'll can't talk him into running it for more than 10 minutes???:)

I would run that rascal for about 30 minutes if it were me and as soon as I could, I'd run it on the lake wide open and get it as hot as it gets (normal temp.) to try to evaporate as much water as I could.

Did you figure out what the water in the boat was all about ?? Was it the infamous "forgotten drain plug"??? --It's happened to all of us!;)

I'm glad to hear you got it running--- nothing worse than losing your favorite boat motor!!! Sounds like you may have gotten lucky for sure and the water level didn't get up to carb. throat height. If not, it'll be good as new!
Good luck,
JBJ
