Engine flushing

I keep my boat in the water (saltwater) and raise the engines when I'm not using them. I flush them when after I use them through a garden hose fitting in the back of the engine.

I've always felt that this method is inadequate. And if it's good enough, which is the best way to flush it while in the water - with the engines tilted up or down?

I've read that the motor should not be running when flushing like this but have always wondered about that too.

Is there a better way to flush these things?

Also is there a way to place a tank of some sort inline with the garden hose so a cleaner can be flushed through the engine with the water?

97 Mercury 175 Outboard Carbureted

Re: Engine flushing

Michaelbr1,

Check THIS out. I'm thinking you could use the mixing unit and cleaner at the flush plug instead of the muffs while the motor is in the water. Just my 2 cents....

Southern Catfisher :)
