I have a 1987 OMC 4.3L Sterndrive that is hard to start after it's warmed-up. The engine will crank, but not start, until just as I release the ignition switch, and then it starts. I can crank the engine for several seconds, increase the throttle, etc., but it won't start until I release the switch.

Check to make sure your coil is getting 12 volts when the key is in the crank position. There is a seperate wire that runs fro mthe starter solenoid/relay to the coil to provide more voltage during cranking. A resistance wire feeds ~9 volts when the key is in the run position only.

Yep. Solenoid.
Went through this not too long ago. Coil was only getting 5V up from the starter solenoid. It always started though.
