i have a yamaha waverunner 1100 that was running fine. it ran out of gas and we had to run on reserve for the first time. after filling it and taking off again it would run for a short period of time and then just die. it will restart in about 30 seconds and then do a repeat. if you try to start it immediatly it growls like it is not wanting to turn over but all is well in about a minute then dies again after a short period? wierd but true

Re: engine dies

The likely suspect would be the fuel switch they corrode and I always bypass them hook up to the reserve nipple on the tank, or you can replace the switch, you are probably getting air in the fuel line from a bad seal in the switch It would also be adviseable to clean out your in line fuel filter remove it blow air through it backwards and see what comes out you may have sucked up some sludge from the bottom of the tank

Re: engine dies

would this also cause the engine to tirn over hard? when it dies it has to sit for minute before it will turn over to start

Re: engine dies

if you pre mix ,,,no gas no oil. engine gets hot from lack of oil and binds up rings. plus being lean is making it hot also and can cause damage to rings and piston crown

Re: engine dies

What comes to mind imediately is that there was probably water in the tank that remained below the main fuel pickup, and when switched to the reserve pickup which resides below the main, it tried to run on water, which has now fouled the fuel system.

If carbureted...

You can try the carb drains. If you see some rusty looking water or goo come out before gas, let it drain till clear. If it ingested a lot some may still remain in the fuel pump or filter.

If problem persists remove carb(s), and or bowls, and clear jets. Including any emulsion tubes ect.

Re: engine dies

its easy to check if water is the problem remove the in line filter and dump it out in a glass let it sit and see if little beads collect on bottom of glass use a clear glass obviously
