very annoying expecially when docking. everytime shift from forward gear to neutral or reverse, engine dies. i suspect its the interrupter switch but haven't a clue where its located on '91 5.7 mercruiser/alpha one drive. or could it be the lower cable?

shift interrupt switch is located on the shift plate on the engine, starbord side on the exhaust riser. sounds like this is the culprit, a new "v" spring is available from mercruiser to help with this problem

How old is the shift cable?
When was the drive off last?
Corrosion does a lot of things, the shift cable is the most likely culprit

It is NOT the shift interrupt switch or it's springs. The shift interrupt switch IS working, that is why the engine dies.
Most common cause, stiff shift cable.

cables are probably originalabout 250 hours

Hours means nothing, it's still 18 years old.

Ayuh,..... Not bad for an 8 year expected service life....

You'd better plan on changing All the rubber parts too...

mechanic from the other board suggested adjusting the lower cable followed by another who had similar prob and fixed with an adj. my supplier agrees that the switch is working,,,thats why it cuttting off. so prob somethingto do with cable. i'll start with easiest...adj cable and update from there. thanks

If you got the time go through the adjustment procedure listed in the manual available in the "Adults only" section.
Try it once.... If it doesn't fix it start from step 1 and try it 1 more time. If that doesn't fix it.... replace the lower shift cable and whatever else you find while your in there....
