Hello all,
March is approaching quickly and I've got an engine coupler to replace. Its in a '88 searay 270 amberjack with twin 4.3l and alpha 1 drives. coupler is not spun, but teeth appear to be pointed on port engine.
I was thinking about laying a 6x6 across gunwhales and lifting motor with a chainfall. as long as i have enough room to get engine high enough to spin around to remove bellhousing and replace coupler, i should be alright. right? what do you think?
of course i will check alignment on both drives before replacing drives.....any thoughts would be welcome. thank you

Ayuh,.... It oughta work just fine, if you've got the space to work in...

Re: engine coupler

Your only concern would be getting the engine high enough to get good access to remove the flywheel cover. You could always prop up the 6x6 with some other lumber. . . .

Re: engine coupler

should work as long as you trust the 6x6 - it seems a long stretch, is that a 10' beam roughly??

my only other concern would be that you have no way to move the engine forward once it is up - may not have enough room to spin it to access the flywheel cover, etc...might get it spun by swinging it in increments??

just go slowly, and double check - safety first!!

Be careful NOT to put any pressure on the bottom of the oil pan.Being that old it's posible that it's rusted even if it looks good. From your first post it sounds like you need a ring gear on the flywheel.GL,Ted

It should work fine, better than having to remove it...

Re: engine coupler

I've done that on my previous boat when I had to replace the transom inner housing. I lifted it enough with a come-along to slide it forward using a large pry bar and then a length of 2 x4. Keep some short lengths of 2 x 4 under the motor mounts for extra safety. It was harder to push it back into place than to move it forward; less to lever against. Replace the rear mount springs and washers. Dont't forget to check the engine alignment before you put the drive back. Good luck. Hy
