Hey guys,

I have a 1986 OMC 3.0L with cobra outdrive. Engine starts but when I put it in gear, no transfer of power to outdrive. Found metal shavings where the outdrive shaft goes into the engine. Was told it was the engine coupler. Does this sound right? Im prepared to buy a service manual and a new couple, but wanted to get you guys opinion if this sounds right. Thanks..

Pull the outdrive and look through the gimbal bearing and into the coupler. Do you see splines in the coupler?????????

I plan on pulling the outdrive tomorrow. I will check it. Im assuming it has to be the shaft or the coupler, right?

Re: Engine Coupler

The coupler splines (as noted) are aluminum and what goes first. But the splines on the shaft also wear from lack of lubrication and become pointed. If reused on a new coupler, they will quickly destroy your new coupler.
