Engine coupler removal.
Is it necessary to lift the engine to remove the engine coupler.Do I have to completely remove it from the boat. If it isn't possible to fix it without removing the engine can I just lift the engine over and off the engine mounts move it forward or (aft) away from the transom I have about a foot of travel that I can move it in that direction. Plus the Engine stringers run that whole direction so I could sit it back on them, and some other home made braces. Has anyone ever tried this or something similar. Or maybe someone has another solution.

If you have the space to work, there is no reason you can't do what you propose...

Do you also think it might be possible not to unhook certain things such as shift cables, throttle cables and certain wires. It appears to me that they also have the travel necessary. Other things I know I have to remove exhausts water inlets/outlets. Etc etc

I would definitely disconnect everything. Nothing worse than 'saving' a few minutes (and that's all it is), to have them damaged and incur the cost in time and money to replace them.

And shift cables do not have the travel in them to move the engine more than a couple of inches forward. Wiring it just one plug, all of about 6 seconds. Throttle cable, maybe, but why risk it?

I've got to ask, why the aversion to removing the engine completely? It is a much, much easier job when the engine is out and on the floor or bench... Personally, I wouldn't consider doing it any other way.
