I think that I may need to replace my engine coupler. The boat is a 1995 21' Sea-Pro with a 3.0 LX Mercruiser. This engine has about 400 hours on it. Seems like awfull low hours to be having to replace this part. Is this about the average life expectancy? Thanks for the comments.

Unless damaged - a coupler will last 15 years.
I work on 2-3 boats per day, only change 5-6
couplers per year. Have you hit anything
when running? Any prop damage?

elpaso, thanks for the reply. I did clip the edge of the launching ramp and took a piece out of 1 blade cresent shaped and about 1.5" long and about .5" deep. Would that have been enough to spin the coupler? Seems premature to be replacing this part. Thanks for the input.

Re: Engine coupler life expectancy???

Just replaced engine coupler on our 1980 vintage 140 Mercruiser. Engine would start reving up about 7 MPH while trying to get up on plane but would not go any faster. Had prop overhauled and rehubbed, did break-in procedure, same result with engine reving up. Took prop back to prop shop, they bench torqued prop to 350lbs of torque with no slippage. Technician told me it had to be the coupler since prop and gears were ok. We took engine out with engine hoist (unhooked all hoses and wiring, unbolted 2 transom bracket bolts and 2 front bracket bolts into beam, leaving adjustment bolt as set). Lifted engine about 1/2" to 3/4" and slid it forward off the drive shaft. Coupler unbolts from flywheel. You will see wear damage where it has been spinning. New coupler was about $235.00 and boat runs like new now. Since old coupler had lasted 23 years and outdrive installed easily the last time it was worked on, we did not see the need to remove outdrive and use alignment tool.

Re: Engine coupler life expectancy???

elpaso, boat runs normally at 3000rpm. As soon as I advance the throttle past that the rpm's increase rapidly and the boat slows down. Also, I have noticed that the engine temp increases about 15 to 20 degrees. I am going to remove the prop that I now have on the boat and replace it with a new prop and hub that I have in the garage. After that I will post the results. Thanks to all for responding, this site has been a blessing since I bought the boat, lots of information.
