Hello i am starting a new post my red lever problem was miner compared to this...
I was running my 1988 48 hp spl with new gas mixed 50 to one. The compression was 120 psi on both cyl the motor has bin sitting a year or two. Cleaned the carbs. had the engine running with water hooked up with a good stream coming out of the top pee hole. Every thing seemed fine with it running maybe a min. or less when i brought ti down to idle it stopped fast. When i went to restart it would not turn over. It would rotate back and forth but not all the way around .
Pulled the head and found table spoon full of dry alum. dust and chips in top cyl. Also some metal transfer on cyl wall . What happened and what do i do now

Just curious.....did you put the motor in gear and rev it up while it was on water muffs?

I don't think you hurt it by running it the way you did. I think the problem was there before. If the mtr didn't have a prior prob it would have held together.

Re: Engine came to a abrupt stop

The engine may have been run for some time in the past with a fouled carburetor. This would have resulted in the cylinder related to the specific carburetor to run lean (improper fuel/oil mixture).

Running on a flushette at a speed over idle does not hurt any engine BUT it is best not to exceed 1800 rpm, and do not keep it at 1800 rpm for any length of time. This rpm mention is not the cause of your engine failure.

Unfortunately you are faced with a complete overhaul. The powerhead will need to be removed, completely torn down, all parts cleaned and inspected, faulty parts set aside and cost of same figured as close as possible to estimate a total cost of repairs. The block will also rerquire boring and honing at a machine shop.

What do you think that might cost worst case ? And can take the power head off and send it some where for this work? The two shops I no around here do not impress me for that degree on work
