i had piston failure today so i took the engine apart it is a 1973 115hp inline 6.upon removale i noticed the crank was rusted on the bottom 3 cylinders could the bottom crank seal cause this i didnt find any cracks in the block if not what else could cause this

How did the sleeves look? Pistons and rings? Do you know history of motor? Was it submerged? Which pistons failed and how(melted, broken, result of overheat or just let go)? When you say crank do you mean the bearing journals? How are the bearings? Especially the bottom one? What does the bottom seal look like? Was it stored laying down on it's side over winter and left to freeze?
Sorry, more questions than answers at this point.

the block looks fine.the bottom 3 journals are pitted i have to get a new crank and new rods.dont know much about the history on the motor.it looked like half of the crank had been sitting in water and rusted up.
