Engine Bolts and Gaskets

My new exhaust manifold should be arriving today so I'm hoping to install it when it gets here. I read on some other posts that it is good to put waterproof grease on bolts before you put them back in the engine (the bolts were a wee bit rusted). After I clean them, should I put grease on the bolts for the exhaust manifold when I re-install them? If so, is there a particular grease that would be best to use?

I've also read some posts on these forums saying to use Perma Gasket when installing new gaskets. Is that what I should use when I install the new gaskets for the exhaust manifold (and other gaskets as I do more in the future)?

Re: Engine Bolts and Gaskets

Kekoa, I recommend using anti-seize compound on the bolt threads. For the gaskets, you need to determine what is recommended by the manufacturer. Mercruiser has gaskets that are covered in some silver compound, and are put on dry. If you are using Volvo gaskets, they will tell you. If aftermarket gaskets, they should also tell you what to use. My guess is put them on dry.

Thanks for the reply Chris! I may buy new bolts as a couple of the old ones had rust. I'll get some anti-seize compound and the gaskets are from Sierra so prob dry but I'll see if they say anything specific for them.

I also need to clean up the surface before I put them on. Is it alright to just shove a small rag in the exhaust outlet while I clean the surface so that no debri falls into the chamber?

Exhaust gaskets go on dry.

Riser gaskets may have a sealant depending on the manufacturer.

And because the exhaust goes on dry and the risers may or may not have sealent, don't forget to recheck the torque after you've reached operating temps

Hold on there Mike, you don't "Check" or retorque anything while it's at operating temperature.

Re: Engine Bolts and Gaskets

Thanks for the additional info. My engine does not have exhaust risers so I don't have to worry about sealant for that. So it should be easy as I'll just put them on dry and torque the bolts (14.8 lb.ft according to manual).
