I have a unique problem with my 1986 Four Winns 19.5 cuddy cabin... the Mercruiser 140 4cyl. inboard runs great for almost an hour and then if we stop and float for a few minutes, the motor starts OK and then stats to sputter when getting it up onto plane. I have replaced the coil and converted the distributor from points and condenser to electronic, and it still acts the same... HELP!!!

Sounds like a plugged fuel tank vent to me.

When this happens, I have taken off the gas cap and it didn't help.

I admit I'm no expert on boats, but from your description I'd suspect possible vapor lock. The way these 3.0's route their fuel line around the motor and utilize a mechanical fuel pump make them look like very good candidates to me. If engine is hot and you shut it down, heat builds up in the engine compartment, and the still fuel in the steel lines starts to boil. If it boils, the fuel pump can't pump it, and now the motor is starved for fuel until the fuel in the line flows enough or cools itself down below the boiling point.

A good old hillbilly technique that I used to diagnose a lot of cars 30 years ago was to wrap all the metal fuel lines in aluminum foil for insulation. If this fixes the problem, you've definitely identified the problem as vapor lock. Then a better more permanant fix is to reroute fuel lines as far away from the hot motor as possible, or add some permanant shielding between the motor and the fuel lines.

Also make sure your motor is cooling properly and not running hot.

You might check the fuel pickup tube in the tank. They have a screen over the end that can get plugged up by debris in the tank, and the vacuum from the fuel pump collects it. Once the engine is shut off, much of the debris will drop off and it will run again till it picks it all back up.
Using a tube on a small electric fuel pump to "Vacuum" the tank after cleaning the screen may cure the problem.
