Last weekend when I was on the bay for about 15 mins. the RPMs droped from 3,200 to about 800 and you can smell gas out the exhaust. I put the engine in neutral, revs up fine, and then put back in gear. A few mins later same issue with the RPM?s dropping from 3,200 to 800 and you can smell gas from the exhaust. The engine is a 2004 5.7 Crusader with a 4 Barrel Holley, electronic distributor, about 250 hours. The engine sounds good and runs good at low RPM?s. I don't have any other issues with the engine, Oil pressure is about 60, temperature gauge about 140 to 160.
Any recommendations on what would cause the engine all of a sudden to drop to 800PM without moving the throttle?

Could be accelerator pump since its a Holley. I would recommend a rebuild kit for it. Give it a good cleaning and install kit. Carbs are not difficult to rebuild with a little mechanical experience.

The accelerator pump is only utilized while transitioning to higher RPMs. It will not cause a BOG while you are already at a High RPM.

Makes no difference if its a Holley or not.

Start by checking your fuel filters and your fuel pump pressure, also look for any loose or corroded connections at your coil and distributor...
