Engine bogging out at full power

I just bought a used 1988 Bayliner Capri with a 305 Chevy engine OMC outdrive.

The boat runs fine until I go past 3/4 throttle. At that point, it will bog down and lose power. 3/4 power and under it runs great.

If I start from a stop and put full power it will accelerate fine until it gets some speed / RPM then it bogs out again.

Seems to be right at 4k RPM / 30 MPH when it has this issue, and it does it every time.

Like I said I just bought this boat, and just put it on the water for a couple of hours for the first time yesterday, so I may be doing something stupid.

I had a mechanic go through the boat to make sure it is water ready, and he gave it the OK, but I am sure he didn't run it at 4k RPM longer than a few seconds as it was hooked up to a hose on dry land.

Any ideas what to check?

Check your fuel filters and fuel lines they may be all gunked up and when you open it up fuel just can't get there fast enough.

Ayuh,.... Welcome Aboard,.... Ditto Cgoshia,.... Examine the Contents of the fuel filter,....

Don't just spin it off, 'n toss it...

If the boat sat with old gas in it for an extended period of time you may want to think about looking into getting a new gas tank once they get nasty there's no good way to get that stuff out.

OK, thanks, probably fuel line / fuel filter / gas tank somewhere. Sounded about right to me, but I am FAR from an expert.

I am flying out of town today so it will be next week before I can look into it, but I will do so so I can rock the lake!

Thank you all!

gas doesn't last as long as it used to. keep running bad gas and you could be adding carb rebuild to your list.

did you give it a tune up?...cap, points, rotor, etc?

change the impeller?...hooked up to the hose is like riding a bike downhill, not working the engine. can mask a bad impeller too since the hose water is under pressure.
