Engine Block Rust Preventive Coating??

I am rebuilding a !983 OMC 5.7 Chevy engine. There was some kind of rust preventative coating inside the block. It is flaking off. What was it and can I replace? I have the marine overhaul kit and the machine work done. Just waiting to reasemble. Thanks for your help guys.

The only thing I know of that some people use inside the engine is Glyptol. Its actually an electric motor paint and is used in the lifter valley. Its normally used inside an engine to speed oil return to the pan. Is it red? Hope this helps.
