Need Help-- We were out skiing for about an hour. Have 10 year old 70hp Johnson. we were cruising at low speed when audible alarm in ignition went off. Stopped engine for about 20 minutes then restarted with no alarms. Can anyone tell me what to look for. Water was flowing from the engine and thre was ample oil in the mixing tank. Thanks for any help!

Threesons,

It sounds to me like the thermostat may be the culprit. If it for some reason wasn't opening all the way and you were putting a load on the engine, such as pulling skiiers, the cylinder walls may have heated up just enough to trigger the alarm. You're getting water by the cylinders, but just not enough to do the job.

Luckily, nothing was probably damaged. If you truly had a severe overheat issue, it would have taken at least an hour (with the cowl off) for the engine to cool back down.

Check and or replace the thermostat. Its a cheap part that protects a bunch of expensive parts

I had a similar problem while skiing, however the alarm kept coming back. I later spoke to my mechanic and he told me to check the following 3 things.
1. Overheat condition. Check your water flow, thermostats and maybe a faulty overtemp sensor.
2. Low level indicator on your oil tank. You did this.
3. Fuel restriction. Check your filter and tank for debris.
My problem turned out to be #3, I had a bunch of #$%& in my tank.
Good Luck

Hello Threesons, On more than one occasion I have pick up the remnants of plastic bags on the foot of my evinrude and blocked or partially blocked the intake. After slowing down and determining that water was pumping the engine cooled down in a short time. The warning horn sounds continuous for over temp, 1/2 second on 1/2 second off for no oil, 1/2 second on 20 seconds off for low oil and continuous for fuel restriction. Its probably the same for different hp Johnson and Evinrude engines.
