I'm a little interested in a '78 19' cobalt bowrider. BUT, 351 OMC.

Guy wants 800 bucks. Says motor and drive are bad.

I Haven't seen the drive but I'm thinking its the large round cutout, too big for my spare 350 and Volvo 270 outdrive.

Is a whole new transum the only option?

Yes, the hole is too big, even for the 270.
If you do go that route, you will need a template to locate the new cutout. I have the .pdf file for the template if you need it.

Mello they are giving hulls away here, myself i just junked a good hull, X19 bowrider.

It was the donor boat i needed the motor.

I couldn't give it away too many hulls just laying around with free signs on them .

Cheif, It's hard to believe this is a givaway hull. Losts of old hulls around here too. I don't see many Cobalts however and that spurred my interest.

Ya, not really a practical project, If it only had a volvo in it now....Even a merc.

I'll keep lookin.

Mello i swear the hull i junked was in good shape just could not give it away.

I would have put it on your trailer and give you the clear title.

I still have the title but the hull is gone like 5 months.

It costs here by pound to have a fiberglass hull chopped up. 400 dollars for the hull i had, got rid of it a different way.

To be clear it would have cost ME 400 dollars to have the hull chopped up.

Bond-o hit it on the head they should pay you to haul it away.

That looks like a nice boat, and with a nice trailer too. But as is it's nothing more than a full scale model.
I know it sounds easier said than done, but isn't there a way one could just plug the hole and build out a mount for outboard motor, but then the controls and all would probably just make doing that a big pain too.

Not only are there free hulls, but people can hardly give away good running good condition boats, with any power package you want, with the economy the way it is. Why make a project out of something that will take so much more work to get to the point of one of these easily serviced, still in production boats on the used boat market?

Re: Engine and outdrive Conversion

I've seen 2-3 boats for free on CL here in the last few months. They are often sitting on the ground stripped of all value. This boat appears to be in much better condition, However I havent seen or inspected it myself.

People have no idea of the true value of their boats. Especially, the older, broken ones!!

I guess the old OMC is the deciding factor.

What if it had an old frozen Merc L6 and a bad MC-1? Would that make any difference in the value?

Thanks for the replies, This was a no brainer. Good luck to the guy that buys it. You almost feel like flagging those ads on CL to try to save the rest of the population.:)

I bet it sells.
