Engine alignment question

I have a 94 196 crownline with the 5.0/ Alpha I pulled everything to have deck replaced and some transom work. When I replaced everything I was able to use all original mounting holes, the mount assembly is correct. I have smacked the alignment tool and greased it, it slides in with some effort (5lb pressure approximate). The concern I have is the grease is scraped clean on the starboard side at the splines, the spline marks are visible around the bar, but tight enough to leave the three spline on the right very shiny. Is this close enough? I can't get any slop side to side on the engine mounts. (I silliconed the lags. I know it can be smoother, But I tend to be picky and indecisive.

Re: Engine alignment question

No, it's not close enough. If you had the transom replaced, it may not be as parallel as the old one was, and now your engine needs to set at an angle slightly. Remove the lag bolts holding the front mounts and lift the front of the motor (from the center line) just enough to take the weight off the motor mounts and let it back down. Now check your alignment again for side to side contact on the alignment bar.
You will probably have to redrill the front mounts.

Re: Engine alignment question

sounds like you may be off center on the front mounts

or the transom repair is not "square"

Re: Engine alignment question

pull the front lags, loosen the 2 rear bolts, shift engine into good alignment, tighten rear bolts, re-check alignment, re-drill new front mount holes.

Re: Engine alignment question

Thanks for the replys, the only thing changed on the the transom was the interior contour, the keyhole was not touched. I have thru hull exhaust tha had leaked and had rotted down each side but not all the way to the hole. I am afraid that if I move the engine the holes will be close enough to the original they will overlap the old ones. How will I stabilize the new holes?

Re: Engine alignment question

fill old holes with fiberglass and re-drill new holes

There ya go! That inside contour is what the inner transom plate bolts to. If it was off from original, then the engine will set incorrectly.
There are specific specs for flatness, thickness, and parallelism of the transom that must be met.

I am afraid that if I move the engine the holes will be close enough to the original they will overlap the old ones. How will I stabilize the new holes?

Turn the mount so the old holes aren't a problem, redrill.

THERE IT IS! Don say's..... Well I didn't think it was changed that much, but it was changed. It may not meet the specs on flatness or parallelism. Do I need to try to match the original specs or can I get the alignment correct with engine adjustment?

Ayuh,... Depending how far off it is, you might be having Problems for along time...

Re: Engine alignment question

It may not be enough to hurt anything, but you will have to get the alignment right, or you will be replacing couplers on a regular basis. I'm sure you don't want that.
So like I said earlier, get the engine in alignment side to side and redrill your mounts.

Re: Engine alignment question

Thank you for the advice, I will see if the local parts house has fiberglass resin.
