end play in Alpha drive shaft.

I'm in the process of rebuilding the water pump of my Alpha drive and have the drive upper and lower separated. The vertical shaft now sticking up from the lower unit has I guess about 1 mm of 'end float' - is this normal ?
I can pull on the shaft and see the taper rollers come up into the outer race and all seems to then be smooth. There is no discernable sideways play.
Thanks for any advice, Chris.

Hi - thanks for that. Also found another thread (kellydee, March 27 2007) with the same concerns and the same answer - though different explanation. Thanks again, Chris.
ps - any thoughts on my other post about the water pump cup and what the hell does the 'slinger' look like ?

"slinger" is most likely a rubber ring, 1/4 inch thick, 1/2 inch hole in it. Inch in diameter.slide down over the driveshaft to the top of the pump upper section.#42, this link
