Empty drive oil reservoir, can I simply fill the reservoir with oil, or from bottom

Drained all oil from old drive, installed brand new drive, full of oil from factory. It came with a small bottle of oil for the reservoir. Can I simply fill the reservoir and it will self drain and fill the lines (I can remover the vent plug to watch) or do I need to fill from the bottom fill plug until I see oil in the reservoir?

Is the QuickSilver gear oil compatible with the Mercury gear oil they supply?

If the drive is full already, all you need to do is fill the reservoir. I would strongly suggest you remove the reservoir and clean it out (This should be done yearly) to prevent the build up of sludge in the reservoir. Then fill the reservoir. After a run or two, the air bubble in the top of the drive will burp out and you will have to top up the reservoir.

Quicksilver & Mercury are the same company. The gear oil is the same.

Good point. Yes the drive is full of oil, I checked the bottom drain plug (ran out) and checked the top vent plug. (Oil is down 1/2 inch from top drain plug). I have no idea what type of oil is in it, but the drive came from Mercruiser, factory box, with a sample bottle included from factory designed to fill the reservoir and says Mercury High Performance Gear Lube+. I had no idea it was synthetic as it does not say on the bottle, but I will assume the drive is the same stuff. So, since this is synthetic, obviously, I will need to drain before adding anything else, ie. QuickSilver premium, etc.

Thx for the heads up>

If it came with a label that indicated that it is filled with Mercury High Performance Gear lube, that's what you should put in the bottle.

http://www.mercurymarine.com/parts-...cision-lubricants/high-performance-gear-lube/ And don't mix "premium" or other NON-synthetic with it.

I am not sure I'm following you. Since you already have HP gear lube, you shouldn't drain it or change it to anything else.......just top off the overflow tank and run it to the end of the summer ........... change it (using Merc HP) when you winterize.

I wish Mercury would rename those. Premium and High Performance to me doesn't clearly indicate which one is above the other.
They both imply similar characteristics.

Regardless, the two are not compatible, so which ever one you have in your outdrive is what you need to use to top off.

If you read the high performance bottle... it says for "mercruiser" drives etc. The premium oil is for outboards, drives, and jet drives under 75hp. So really the hp gear lube is all that should be used in mercruiser drives :) BUT I have used the premum for a few years since the hp was so hard to get around here for a while.
