Re: eminant domain

Government is stealing land from hurricane victims so they can build a marina and high priced homes on the land once occupied by tax paying citizens of more modest means. Theft by judicial fiat. Shameless.

The issue is a town council using "eminant domain" to confiscate property and sell it to another private party. ED was meant to take property, at fair value, for the good of the populace-roads, schools, levees, etc.

This is ONE thing that rodbolt and I can agree on-besides BRP and "genuine" parts. ;)

This behavior, by local governments, is scary, at best, and is a major threat to ANY property rights you think you might have.

Don't think voting in local elections is important????? Think again-THINK HARD!

Apathy will be the death of freedom.

Re: eminant domain

Yep....... They been trying to get rid of them people's houses for years.....

But I gotta tell ya, cause I used to work up there about everday.... There is'nt a soul in his/her right mind who's going to buy a condo there, or go shopping there, I don't care what they build....

The area in question is right smack-dab in the middle of the WORST neighborhood (surrounded, if you will), and tearing up these peoples houses IS NOT going to kill the problems in Riviera Beach!.... Too get too it, ya gotta go thru it!....

Don't get me wrong, the neighborhood is'nt totally blighted... Matter of fact, there are some quite nice homes in the area... But at any time of day, any vice you wish to partake in is readily available on that stretch of US-1 (aka, Broadway)...

IMHO, if the powers that be in Riviera Beach had half a brain, they'd use their "eminant domain" and bulldoze everything WEST of US-1 where the blight is, and leave that neighborhood east of US-1 alone....

Similar crap happened and is still happening in down-town WPB.... They tear down the old and build all new condos and shopping centers, but the drugs, hookers, mugging, all goes on down there everyday...

I understand Mayor Browns problems, but this won't solve a thing...

If you ever read the writings of Frederic Bastiat, 1801-1950, he warns against legal plunder. The government plundering the individual by passing laws that make it legal for the government to do what an individual cannot legally do to another individual.

What a state we are in!!

Snapper,

I understand what you are saying, yet you miss the point. The POINT IS that those people OWN those homes and businesses.

Allowing a bunch of elitist snobs (like me)to steal the property is just plain WRONG.

Politicians are being spoon fed a promise of higher tax revenues, by the elitists. That, in itself, is a good reason to VOTE locally.

Well it just happened here in my city. Private land condemned to be used for commercial purposes, namely, a new stadium for the Dallas Cowboys.

And that wasn't the first time it's been done here...the first time it was a baseball stadium built for the benefit of an elite group whose leader I will not now name, but here's a hint: he's now the leader of the free world.

jtexas,

You've been somewhat of a "troll" lately. What gives?

Even if GWB was behind your last ED, it still doesn't make it right. I agree. But, I suspect you do not have all the facts.

Please, do tell.

On second thought, we've been taught that just the thought and accusation is enough for a condemnation.

DJ... You and I do not disagree here... You're damn right it's wrong...

Maybe you missed..

Anywhoo.... There's more to this story in Riviera Beach that I could tell, but it's very complex.... Throw in some racism, crime, some ugly old sail boats anchored in the ICW, and questions too who actually owns what underwater property and where... It's a big ugly mess... :(

Re: eminant domain

well I watched an interview of mayor brown, what a dancing bear, he wont answer any direct questions, he also says it will create Jobs. a magic word. how many JOBS will a seaworld or condos or resturants provide? most those jobs wont pay enough to rent one of them new planned condo's much less buy one.
we have the same problem on the sandpile I live on. houses start at 250K and rapidly climb over the 500K mark. and you still cant see the water.
kitty hawk Just illegally used an ED to grab some ocean front and ocean view properties, seems some of the town council told outright lies about it, seems they got caught. now us taxpayers get to foot the bill for the 5 lawsuits that have been filed against the town. last november we voted the bums out, hopefully the new crop of bums will rectify some of it.
but here on the sand hill we have such a summer labor shortage we import from overseas, most the jobs have no bennies and pay less than 8 dollars an hour, I guess that would support a family in poland, latvia or lituainia but here it wont make insurance and car payments, much less allow a pursual of the american dream.

Who says GWB has anything to do with my ED - I take pills for that! (little joke there, sorry) ;)

Okay, thanks for asking, long story short, the Texas Rangers Baseball Club (managing General Partner George W. Bush, later to become governor of Texas) & City of Arlington put together a deal for a stadium financed partly by a 1/4 % sales tax, which included condemnation of some underutilized land belonging to some other wealthy family. After some number of years ownership of the stadium passed lock stock & barrel to the team. With the new stadium (and some other positive changes, one of which was not the trade of Sammy Sosa to the Chicago Cubs for Harold Baines), the value of the team increased substantially. Point is, it's the kind of deal that gets done by major players. In this the ED was a minor part of it, except now a court of law has determined that the dollar value paid for the land was millions below fair market value, and the team and city are arguing over who should have to pay the court award resulting from the lawsuit won by the family.

Re: eminant domain

I want to move to AZ, but I would have to bulldoze a Reservation to get the property I want . . . :D

Sorry couldn't help it. This one bugs me. First, I totally agree with DJ. You must get involved.

Second, I don't think that all eminent domain cases are a coordinated attempt to gain power. Individual rights are something that conservatives fight kinda against sometimes, me included. Isn't the fight to define marriage as hetero about what's best for society not individuals? Isn't the fight against PC stuff about the big picture vs. the individual picture? I think there is a right time and place for eminent domain. Definitely not black and white.

jtexas,

Didn't I just say that if GWB did that, I don't
agree with it?

I also disagree with him on border issues. But, I support him. He has done a fine job defeating terrorism-a long battle-but we have the situation being at least addressed. Something Pres. Clinton ignored. Our REAL threat is our open boarders.

I have "secret" way of getting to government.

It's called a VOTE.

Don't vote-you have NO right to complain.
