howdy, I just purchased a 1988or 89 mercury 4hp. What stuff or tools should I include in a "oh *&@$ repair kit. Are there problems this motor is known for? Can I adapt it to charge a battery? Can I adapt it to get more horses out of it? Thanks, bill

You want screwdriver(s) for the gearcase drain and vent screws, plus a tube of gearlube. A Sparkplug and wrench, and something for the propnut. A spare prop would be a good idea. Spare oil, too. Maybe some grease and a rag.

How about a cotter pin and punch if one is needed?

absolutely, and a pair of needlenose pliers to both help straighten out the old pin and bend the new one

don't forget a small bag to keep your (*&$#$%$!!! toolkit all together and ready to grab-and-go.

It's a 4 hp ....You could buy a spare one ,keep it in the boat and swap it out if the other fails.
As for problems ,nothing I have heard about, as long as it was mantained it will last a time.

You can get alternator kit for 88-89, Part # 16837A 2 and recifier kit 16838A 2, but don't expect much of a charge, maybe 3-5 amps at WOT.

If you want more HP the best thing is buy a larger engine. Not cost effective to do much with these engines even if it is possible.
