embarassing question 86 J8

I cleaned my carb and i can't remember which hose goes to which nipple. One leads into the primer, the other comes from the fuel pump.

Which one goes to the lower nipple at the bottom of the float chamber?

I can't find a viable answer in my manual.

now i'm not doubting your experience on this but.......when i connect the fuel line to the bottom nipple on the float chamber and the primer line to the nipple on the carb body just above the float chamber, and then squeeze the fuel bulb, gas comes gushing out of the carb everywhere, the bulb won't firm and the primer won't work.

If I reverse them, there are no leaks and the primer works fine and the bulb firms.

Unfortunately neither position is allowing the engine to fire and now i'm really confused.

Just to be sure I am understanding correctly, in the blow up below, should the fuel pump line go to nipple #14 or the one closest to #8? for johnson 86 8hp.
