Elvin: Nissan 50 TLDI prop question

Elvin- I seek your infinite wisdom....

I am wondering if I need to try a different prop on my boat. I have a Nissan 50 TLDI on a Smokercraft Stinger 161(V hull aluminum walleye boat). The boat weighs 600 lbs. dry, the motor 210 lbs., 12 gallons fuel at 80 lbs., batteries at 50 lbs, personal gear 100 lbs, and myself at 250 lbs. I am estimating the boat on the water to be around 1300 lbs. + or - 100 lbs. The motor is mounted exactly as recommended by Nissan, and I am running a 11.6 X 11 prop. The motor runs at 5300 RPM normally and I can trim it up to the borderline of cavitation and get 5500 RPM out of it but am seeing a dissappointing 27.5 mph out of it max.

When she is optimally trimmed up, a slight slide is noticable when in the corners. Outside of that, it runs like a dream, but I am a bit dissappointed in the performance. The prop recommendation came from Tohatsu/ Nissan thru my dealer who called in to ask.

My father is running a very very similar sized Alumacraft boat with a Yamaha 50 4 stroke and blows my doors off and runs at about 33+ mph.

Do you have any prop recommendations? Or is this about as good as it is going to get??

And if you do have a prop recommendation, do you have it available?

Thanks!!!!

Re: Elvin: Nissan 50 TLDI prop question

BTW, not sure that it matters, but both the boat and motor are 2004's. Not sure if the optimum RPM has been consistant in all 50 TLDI's over the last few years.

Re: Elvin: Nissan 50 TLDI prop question

More like infinite guesswork....your running a little low on RPM's, but your still in the right range. You could drop down an inch or two in pitch and be better off as far as RPM. You might even pick up a couple of mph if your lucky, but props are trial and error items with no guarantee as to what they will exactly do. The 50 TLDI should be out performing the Yamaha on identical boats. However, similar boats are not identical boats and could account for the difference.

Best advice...drop two inches in pitch in an aliuminum prop or one inch in a stainless. Iboats has a pretty good deal on props so check there first.

Good Luck

Elvin, can you shoot me a note with somoe specific recommendations? I know, it is trial and error...I figure that your best guess is a heck of alot better than mine. I am sorta prop dumb...I know enough to be dangerous, but not enough about props to be effective..... :p

My email address is BZiemann@zoll.com. Thanks!

Re: Elvin: Nissan 50 TLDI prop question

Alrighty, I found the prop selection chart on the Nissan Outboard web site....roughly looks like I would fall into the Moderate load category- assuming I have estimated weights correctly....and looks like it would call for a 11.1x13 prop for the 50 TLDI. Is that moving in the right direction?

Nope, you need to go the other way. Going to a 13 would drop your RPM down 400-500.
