Hey Elvin- I ran into an interesting post on another web site in reference to the TLDI 50's- I thought I would get your take- it sounds accurate but I thought the info on the Yamaha engine block was interesting. Here is what was posted in regards to the 50 TLDI:

Here is some interesting facts if you're thinking of buying either the 40 or 50.

- The block comes from Yamaha, 687/8/9ccm same as the 50hp Yamaha 2 stroke (they are unstoppable engines)
- It actually weighs 205.7 pounds
- They sell them in a 15" shaft which is good because most of the plans on here are from the 60's that call for 15" transoms hence my Tuffy
- Reliable, sounds like a diesel-ish idling, powerful, nice gear ratio
- Tohatsu have always made a bear of an engine providing with top horse vs rpm and torque vs rpm as well
- Considering the weight compared to a 2 stroke (lets take Mercury for instance) both 50hp lets say about on par when you add the oil reservoir for the Merc and the oil tank for the Tohatsu but you save 40% more gas with the Tohatsu but lose about 1/10th (100ccm) of displacement
- They use the Mercury lower end units including the same one as the 50 2 stroke Mercury
- They have the same propshaft as Mercury uses so the same stainless/aluminum props
- It comes with a prop/tach/tank when you buy one
- They are cheaper, lighter and faster than fourstrokes but with the same results except for noise
- They idle down to 700rpm
- The technology is the same as Mercury uses for their Optimax which is from Orbital Technology

====================================

I think we are all aware of the licensing agreement with Orbital- what is the poop on the Yamaha block?

Re: Elvin- checking accuracy of another post on TLDI's

Not the same block....Usual internet B.S. from someone, who read what someone else said, who heard it from a guy at a bar, whose mother got it from her dentist, who's best friend thought they looked the same:) Virtually everything else is B.S. too...Except the part about what they come with, which is true. Generally speaking, consumers have no way of knowing anything about the make up of what may fit from one brand to another, but, You can find some parts interchangeability due to the way the Japanese outsource some specific types of parts. For instance:

Fuel pump for brand A also fits brand C...Because both brands buy an off the shelf pump from fuel pump manufacturer Q.

Any other parts that fit would be blind luck....But, I have seen a lot of Jap trim parts that fit from brand to brand.

Re: Elvin- checking accuracy of another post on TLDI's

Thanks, Elvin- I have been on here with you long enough that I thought that this would have been a bit of knowledge that would be out there if it was true....

You wouldn't happen to know any dealer that has a left over 2005 or earlier 90 TLDI Nissan (with the gray cowl) that they would like to get rid of....

I am 2 years without a TLDI and am starting to wish I had one again.... I miss the smooth idle and fuel economy. I also miss the quiet... When I originally researched buying another one, the prices were so out of wack, I couldn't justify one (TLDI's at that time were as expensive here as an E-Tec). Now that the economy is poor, I am guessing there are some deals out there....

I hate the current Nissan graphics and Tohatsu's in the midwest are extremely rare. It appears that resale is less on the Tohatsu due to lack of brand recognition in the midwest. People in the midwest are at least familiar with the Nissan name if for no other reason they have noticed them at retailers such as Cabelas.

So- know of anyone that is interested in selling a Nissan TLDI 90 that accepts trades?
