The O is for Oil Injection.
The P is usually for Pleasure...Nipponese for Remote Control Model, if it is a Japanese engine.

Re: ELPTO

Ok, one more time.... L is 20" shaft length, XL is for 25", XXL is...30". There is no designation for short shaft, actually there is,... it's nuthing at all.. Now, depending on which model of Merc. you are looking at, it may not be available as a 15" short shaft, or a XXL or XL!! Elvin.. come on, get it right! You're internetoutboards.com, right??

Re: ELPTO

P.V.,

No offense, but you are wrong. Short shaft or if you are old enough to remember it, standard shaft, is designated with an S in most brands. Although it is a 1 on Nissan. Mercury does not use the S on its outboards, but all the Japanese outboards do. Fatpratt1996 didn't tell us what brand of outboard he has....hence my original " if it is a Japanese engine"

Re: ELPTO

"ELPTO" is a Mercury designation!! That's what he ask'd for! A Johnson/Evinrude would be: for example... J15RES, Johnson 15 hp, Rope start, 1990.. No short shaft designation so... it's a short shaft! Evinrude .. E25TELSR, Evinrude 25hp, Tiller, electric start, long shaft, 2004. Not trying to upset anyone, don't know how the Japanese do it but the AMericans have done it this way for some time! And although I've been "doing" this for longer than I care to admit, I don't remember an "S", but heck, I could have forgotten that also!!

Re: ELPTO

ELPTO is used by Suzuki, Yamaha, and Tohatsu as well. My knowledge of OMC designations is limited as that is the only engine we have not been a dealer for.
