Elgin lower unit grease

Anyone know what should be used in the prop assy for grease? I got a copy of an old manual that just refers to Elgin grease. It sure looks like grease and not gear oil, unless its just really old (greasy not runny). It's a 50's West Bend 7.5hp.<br /><br />Thanks

You can check me on this...but I read somewhere that some actually used axle grease which was allowed to mix with water to get the creamy color but it actually was supposed to be that way. I forgot what motor I was reading about, but not all use gear lube.... my '72 johnson 50hp actually uses hydraulic fluid in the lower unit.

Use Lubriplate 105...get it at NAPA
