Electrothermal valve?

Can someone explain how the electrothermal fuel enrichment valve operates on my '02 90 hp yamaha 2 stroke? I rebuilt the carbs, and it made me curious as to how the enrichment system operates. The test procedure stated to supply 12 volts for several minutes and measure valve movement. I was under the impression that this helped with cold starts, as well as during the warm-up period, but I'm puzzled. Thanks.

Re: Electrothermal valve?

It is yamahas version of an automatic choke. It variably enriches the fuel mixture according to temperature, as the motor warms up the valve slowly deactivates. RPM's are also raised (fast idle). It can take up to 3 minutes to deactivate.

Thanks for the response. Your explanation helped to clarify things for me. I am a curious sort; always wanting to know 'why' things do what they do. Thanks again.
