Hi,

I have a 1988 OMC 4.3l with a prestolite screw down cap. Has anyone converted the ignition from points to electronic? I understand about the shift interupts, I just can't find anyone who supplies parts for the conversion. Does the whole distributor have to be replaced? Any information whould appreciated, thanks in advance.

Re: Electronic Ignition

Do a search at the top of this page and enter "electronic ignition." Petronix is the unit that appears to stand out... Good luck!

SS182

Re: Electronic Ignition

I replaced my points 5 years ago on my 1989 305cid engine. Very easy job. You basically remove the points and replace with a little module and pickup. I am looking in the summit catalog and not seeing a 4.3l GM pertronix. Call them and give your engine specs and they should be able to set you up. Looks like they are about $74 each. Great value!! 1 800 230 3030

BT

Re: Electronic Ignition

Just bought the Petronix conversion kit. Looks pretty easy. Will not know till spring. Check e-bay. Bought mine for $53.00 through a dutch auction. The guy is a dealer and had all kinds and plenty of them at the same price on 12/26/2002. Give the guy a e-mail and see if he can help you out ebay@carshopinc.com

Re: Electronic Ignition

Hey guys thanks for the info. Well I guess Pertronix it is. I did see a schematic on the Pertronix web site about dealing with a shift interrupter, Is this what I need for the conversion? Thanks again for all responces.

Re: Electronic Ignition

Keep your old points and condenser stuff in a ziplock on board. If the e-ign goes bad on the lake, you can reinstall your points, rough gap them with a folded business card, and get home. The only problems with the kits, is you cant just clean/ file them and save the weekend like you can, many times, with points. And, the local parts store most likely wont stock pertronix kits.
