I have a 1991 omc king cobra w/ 454 chevy the entire ignition system is electronic. no distributor. Now when the engine reaches operating temp the engine cuts back to 2200 rpms.(This only happens when the boat is under power, notin neutral at the dock). The mehcanic that is working on it says that it is not overheating. we have replaced the impeller in the outdrive. all the sensors, the main module. now it cuts back at 3800 rpms a little improvement. his best suggestion is to convert the whole system over to mercruiser at a cost of $10,000. He says that bombardier is not supporting omc stern drives and in a few years we will not be able to get any parts for this boat.
We really love this boat and hate to part with it.
(Its a 27' sunbird barletta-1991). Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hmmmm...

First suggestion... Fire that mechanic.

Are you saying this problem only occurs when the engine reaches operating temp...below that it run at WOT? If so...that sure sounds like something heat related. I don't know squat about OMC...but it certainly seems to me your problem can be resolved without having to do a total repower.

I can't comment on the Bombardier issue...I don't know what former OMC products they plan to support. However, I seem to recall Volvo took over OMC's Cobra line...perhaps a Volvo/Penta dealer could help you out.

Get a second opinion...then decide what you're next move will be.

Walt
