electrically challenged

Went to put a new pump in my bildge today and discovered that my other pumps, my lights and horn are not working either. My motor starts, my fuel gauge reads, my tilt/trim works. Checked all my fuses and all seem to be good. Any ideas? The boat is a 99 trophy 1903. The only extra add ons is a fish finder.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

Dave

Re: electrically challenged

Did the pump work before you added the pump? That may be a clue. Next thing I would do is check to see if the pump is bad or if you have no power to it. You connect the pump directly to the battery which bypasses the wiring, fuses and switch. If pump is OK you need to trace the circuit with a volt ohm meter. If the pump is bad - - .

I just found the same problem with mine this afternoon.

Re: electrically challenged

The pump was already bad. But the other 2 pumps and the horn and lights worked 2 days ago. I checked the main fuse. Maybe there is an inline fuse before the main positive wire meets the bus board under the console?

Dave

Re: electrically challenged

lotta times just 'eyeballin' a fuse doesn't make a fuse good.. it's hard to see ,sometimes...

ohm it out..

if at last resort.. take a 12v battery (in hand ) neg to ground.. take a wire to pos. but put in a inline fuse in the wire for safety..

strip back some insulation at one/any of the things that don't work.. touch it to .. see what works then..

make sure the perminate battery is disconnected..so there is no other power on board but whats in hand..

then go back to the fuse box ..test to see where/whats hot..

thats your fuse ..thats your circut..

this don't 'fix' a thing.. but gets you moving the right way..

Re: electrically challenged

Riggerdave
Many motor have two 50 amp fuses back on the engine. Mine are right above the starter and wired to starter main battery terminal.

Re: electrically challenged

Boats cannot ground to frame per automotive specs. Check all grounds for contact. Bad grounds will cause many apparenly unrelated problems.

Re: electrically challenged

Found the problem. There is a connector under the console which connects the wiring harness from in the hull to the harness under the console. Pulling things in and out, I must have loosened it up over time. Pulled it apart, cleaned it up and works like a champ.

Thanks for all the imput. I'm actually feeling a little less challenged :D

Dave
