Electrical; red plug - black plug?

I have a 1978 Evinrude 35hp that has a black harness plug as appossed to the red one. This plug has 5 terminal pins. I also just picked up a control box with a black plug.

After returning home and comparing the two I noticed that the wires in the harness do not match colors.

Can someone please guide me as to what pins are for what? I understand the 2 larger pins are for the ignition, 1 is for the choke, 1 for the kill switch and the other?
Then on the control side how do I determine if the wires match up with the motor side?

Thanks, Kevin

Re: Electrical; red plug - black plug?

Thanks David!

Those 2 links were very helpful.

Checked the wire harnesses on both. Engine matches colors and termination from the looks of it. But will trace down to make certain. The harness from the control is a different matter. Only matching color is the Red - Violet and that wire is a smaller gauge. The other colors are; Blue, Blue-white, Purple-white and White.

I suppose the colors in that harness dosen't really matter as long as they terminate at the correct spot with the plug and the switch..

Looks like I have a bit of work ahead of me. Will let ya know!

Re: Electrical; red plug - black plug?

Back again,
The 1st thing I see is there is no lead going to the "A" terminal which after looking at the diagrams in the links should there be a jumper wire going from "B" to "A"?

The wires in this harness are arranged like this at the key switch;

M raised = Black + Blue, go to Kill switch
S = Yellow-Red, to neutral safety
C = Purple-white, to choke
A = Open, no connection
M = Blue-white + Black-white also to kill switch
B = Red

I am assuming they used a blue and a blue-white as negative leads.

Were I am at right now the motor cranks and the auto choke seems to work as I can hear it click but can't see from the side I'm working on. There seems to be no ignition which would make sense as there is no connection to "A" on the switch.

If I disconnect the plug and jump the engine plug to the start solenoid it will start and run just fine.

What am I missing?

Thanks again David,

That last link didn't help. The Black plugs I have only have 5 wires.

Will have to connect them then try to check continuity. Right now I'm really at a loss.

is it just a 5 pin plug or are there more possible wire inserts?

Maybe this will help some one help me solve this.

I looked over the 2 links and another post regarding key switch wiring and there appears there is supposed to be a violet wire going to the "A" terminal which I do not have, nor can I find.

yep thats what i was thinking-your plug is set up for all the gauges and extras even though your motor doesnt have everything.

does the diag not match any of those wires?

Re: Electrical; red plug - black plug?

Going by the diagram in the 2nd link everything looks right on the switch yet with the 2 plugs connected it doesn't seem to be firing.

My neighbor has a spark tester I just haven't been able to get it from him as of yet.

Is there an easy way to test this switch?

does it fire up without the plugs hooked together by jumpimg the starter?............by the way you wont be able to kill it if it does unless you plug the wires back together.

does it crank at all with the key?...or just not fire?

Re: Electrical; red plug - black plug?

With the plugs connected it will turn over and I can hear the choke when I push in the key but it will not fire.

Unplugged I can jump the starter solenoid and it starts right up. To kill it I just choke it out.

how about the neutral safety switch in the remote control?

Re: Electrical; red plug - black plug?

Right now I have the key switch, neutral safety and the kill switch removed from the control box. Neutral switch seems to be working as if I do not depress it the motor will not turn over. Maybe the Kill switch? I will test that tomorrow and let you know. May even remove this key switch and see if I can test it w/o any wires connected.

From what I have been told any Red or Black connector should work. Some may have added features like a tach, over temp horn and such.

Re: Electrical; red plug - black plug?

Disconnected the switches this morning and did a continuity test following the explaination in Davids second link. What I found was that everything is working as it should with the exception on the start position.

When turned to the start position I have continuity from B to S but lose continuity between B and A. If I hold the key in the start position at times I get a reading and others I do not. But the ohm reading is I can get is really low.

Also, should the kill switch be normally open or closed?

Re: Electrical; red plug - black plug?

Success? Mostly.

After I made my last post yesterday I reconnected the key switch, although I left out the Kill switch, neutral safety switch and the electric choke. So all I had was B, S and the 2 M's connected.

Turned the key and it fired right up! Not even a hesitation.

So now to narrow down the problemed switch. Any bets? W/O knowing whether the kill swich is supposed to be normally closed, which this one is, I'm thinking it may be in the choke circuit.

I'll post back ater I figure this out.

Thanks David_R for all your help, it is much appreciated.
