Electrical problem with smoke Hello,

OK heres the deal, my motor wont start, the starter goes up but wont come down. (tries to start like it has a week battery) and it smokes (I don't know where from). It also does this when the trim tilt is operated (both with the ignition off and on) it also operates very slowly (again like a dead battery, but it's fine). This happened out on the lake, no signs of anything, motor was fine until I went to leave. After I saw the smoke I disconnected the battery and tried to make my way back on the trolling motor. After looking for signs of mice (no obvious problems) in the wiring from the controls and wiggling the wires I tried again, this time with no problems starting. HOWEVER when I operated the trim the tach jumped all around. Also the main fuse never blew and the warning horn (when you first turn the key) was much quieter then it usually is. My first guess is a grounding problem but I'm probably wrong. Any help and ideas would be GREATLY appreciated.

Thanks.

Re: Electrical problem with smoke

90% of starter problems are bad connections. remove and clean both ends of the battery cables, so that they are shiney, also the cable from the solenoid to starter. check for nicks in the cables. and make sure the connectors are on the wire good. the cable tend to corrode from the inside out, if nicked, corroded wires, and connections, heat up and cause resistance to the follow of electricity, thus the starter doesn't get enough. you can also take jumper cable pos battery post to large post on starter. with a good connection, the engine should spin. then if the starter is good clean everything and retest. then trouble shoot solenoid. starters can be rebuit at a starter/alternator shop, much cheaper than a new one.

also have the battery load tested at the auto parts store, free, i've had new batteries go bad

Bad cable(s) and/or bad connections.
Make all the connections really shiny.
