It's July and the Seattle Washington area and fishing is hot. So if you have something wrong with your motor you're basically screwed cuz all mechanics are booked up. Friend of mine called with a Merc and I said I'd try to help him out. It's a 2019 150 4 stroke Merc. Picture is the model number.

Client/friend says, what I suspect is a volt meter, kept going down and down until it wouldn't idle properly.

Do these newer 4 strokes still have a rectifier? I'm going to go down and load test the batteries and do the normal test stuff.

Let me know if you have anything special to do.

Right, I still can't send pics

The 1150F23ED is the model number, need serial number
Most new larger 4 stroke use a alternator but does depend on size

Alternator, fuse able links and battery's test ok but alt is singing, hotter than hell and stinks like burning electrical.

Best guess the alt is on its way out. Let me know if you don't agree.

Number comes up as a 135, 150 and 150 seapro, you have 150
All have a alternator which is 55 amp

Alternator, fuse able links and battery's test ok but alt is singing, hotter than hell and stinks like burning electrical.

Best guess the alt is on its way out. Let me know if you don't agree.
How does the Bat check ok?
Bat should measure 12.6 to 12.7V being off the charger after a few hours

When motor is running you should measure 14.3 to 14.5V

Exactly....he was on the water on Saturday and the battery's were at 12.75 today....bounced back well.

I had already done a full battery test 30 days ago and taught him how to run two batteries correctly. His first battery, or the volt gauge kept dropping he said (non-digital gauge), then he switch to the other battery and some symptoms came up again.

Talked with a Merc dealer and he agreed in my diagnostics. For me it was three things, whirring noise when you removed the cowl, hot with your hand 3 inches away and a lovely burning wire type smell if you got your nose anywhere close.

Fusible link was working correctly. All these symptoms and we barely ran the motor.

Only odd thing is for now (at least for now) is that the charging numbers looked fine.

Readings did not go up until 1000 RPMs.

The Alt doesn't start charging until the RPM is increased the first time above 1000, but once it starts it should continue to charge at idle and above
