Electric trolling motor head depth

I just bought a minn kota saltwater series trolling motor. I bought the 60" model just because I'm not sure if I will be getting a bigger boat in a few years or not.
My question is does it matter how deep I let the motor head in the water? Or should I only let it in 12-24 inches like another website suggests?

Thanks in advance.

Re: Electric trolling motor head depth

It will work if you mount a trolling motor deeper, but the reason folks don't mount them too deep is because that keeps you from getting into shallower water. The trolling motor will hit a lot more debris the deeper you mount it. It will also stir up a lot more mud, silt and such making fishing that much more difficult...

On the flip side if your using it in rough conditions you will want it as deep as it gets to keep it from coming out of the water,..
