I was just looking at the trolling motors, and I think I'm interested in an electric steer trolling motor. What would be some of the advantages and disadvantages of this type of trolling motor?

Thanks.

Re: Electric Steer Trolling Motor

Howdy, Clint.

Welcome to iboats. :)

I used Minn-Kota power drive and autopilot trollers on my last two boats. I was very happy with them, especially compared to the cable steer models I had used before.

The only con I see is that they cost more and have electronics that can fail.

Re: Electric Steer Trolling Motor

Electric steer motors when mounted on a quick release plate can be removed in seconds and you won't have to deal with the several feet of stiff, unremovable cable attached to them. Electric steer foot pedals (at least Minnkota) need to be kept in dry storage when not in use and if you have a heavy foot, operate the pedal like you have an egg under your foot. There is no need to stomp heavily on the contorls and doing so can rupture the membrane switches which then allows moisture between it and the circuit path on the PC board and corrosion soon follows. Electric steer motors are a tad slower to respond than cable steer. I've owned several of them and find them to be very good motors when treated with a little respect.
