i was wondering if any body knew what sorf of price i would be expecting to pay for a good used 18 hp electric starter from the wreckers 1966 to be exact. i have also heard the quality of the starters would be questionable after nearly 40 years. and what sort of price would i expect to pay for a seirra after market starter.

thanks

I see them going around $160 new. API makes MOT-2005N and I think you can still get ones from the dealer (for more money). I wouldn't be afraid of an old starter since they usually wern't much of a problem. I've got one where the brushes are worn out, but it still worked perfectly. I'll replace them for the $5 they cost.

If you're looking to convert to a starter setup, you'll probably need a starter bracket, solenoid, start key, wiring, and perhaps even a new flywheel too. If you're going to remotes, you might want an electric choke as well.

Sorry, I really don't have much of an idea on the wreckers price. Can't be much though.

PS - that starter was also used on the big twins (25, 28, 30, 33, 35 and 40hp engines) Some of the later ones are a little longer so I'm not sure if they physically fit, but they probably do too. There ought to be piles of them out there.
