Have a complete electric start start kit from a 1977 35 hp Johnson and was told it would fit my 1958 18 hp. Just does not sound right. However before I take this to a mechanic to install I would like more opinions. Wish I had the ability to work on o/b motors however I could destroy an anvil. My ability ends when I mix 24/1 oil/gas.

Even if it fit, you will need the electric start shroud. Good luck on finding that.

It WILL NOT fit. There's about a dozen reasons why. Those starter brackets are hard to come by, BTW. The only starter bracket that will fit that motor has to come from a johnson if it is a johnson, not an evinrude and vice-versa, and it has to be from '57 or '58. Any other starter bracket will not fit.
If F-R says it.........:)
If you can find the starter bracket and starter, your manual start cowl will fit over it with no problem. The only difference between the electric start cover and manual start cover is the stickers on the carb plate. It's the belly pan that is different---it has a hole through it for the wiring harness to pass through it.
Post a free ad on aomci.org and do what I did----pray!
good luck,
JBJ

Not only that, if your 1958 18hp is a Johnson, it has to be a Johnson bracket. The Evinrude bracket does not have the hood mount. However, you can use a Johnson bracket on an Evinrude.
