Electric fuel pump.

Hi I'm new to the forum and also new to outboard motors.
Ok I have a 1985 Johnson 150 that I just traded for. Took to lake today and it would start and idle fine but when you give it gas it bogs out and pulls at low rpm's then it will kick in and run real good for anout 1/2 mile then back to low rpm's.
It smells like it's flooding.
Someone put an electric fuel pump from local auto parts store on it.Gould that be the problem?
Everything I can find on it the engine has it's own fuel pump and shouldn't have an electric fuel pump.
Also I mixed the oil 40 to 1 because the guy said that he didn't trust the oil injection system.
Thank You all Danny in Arkansas:confused:

Re: Electric fuel pump.

Hi Danny. Where is the electric pump located? Some people install a low pressure pump in place of the primer bulb so they don't have to pump the bulb before each cold start. Your engine did come from the factory with it's own pulse operated fuel pump. 50:1 is the correct mix for your engine if it has no oiling system (VRO).

Rick The pump is in the line right above the squeeze ball. And the guy told me he mixed the oil with the gas because he didn't trust the oil injector.Maybe I should have turned the electric fuel pump after I started it.(I didn't) Maybe why it seemed to be over fueling.:(

Re: Electric fuel pump.

electric fuel pump on a outboard is extremely dangerous. he probably did it to keep from replacing the VRO pump. my suggestion is to remove the Vro fuel/oil pump, and convert it to the premix system, of the 1982 150. you can see details here. use drop down menu to Johnson,
http://shop2.evinrude.com/ext/index.aspx?s1=bf6ad09c53cead335fcfd8a6471c0f7f

also check you spark immediately after it bogs the second time, could be coil is getting hot an failing, also is the pee stream strong. the motor could be running hot.

Re: Electric fuel pump.

Hi It looks like the motor don't even have a fuel pump on it.Just an electric pump in the gas line. Wonder if it could be dirty carbs. Fuel filter that he added to the line looks clean.

model # J150tl cos
serial #j612 8287
Any information on this motor will be appreciated. Danny

Re: Electric fuel pump.

the VRO pump is the fuel and oil pump, outboards do not have electric fuel pumps, (except some 4 strokes). you either need to replace the VRO with an new OMS pump ($365.00) or use the fuel pump set up, that were on the 1982 150.

Why 1982 -150 ? I have no oil tank .Maybe I just need to take it to the shop.
Unless someone around Greenbrier Arkansas will come take a look at it. I know nothing about out board motor and to darn old to learn.

Hey would i be better off if I install a 115 hp Mercury on it I have one that haven't been started in 2 years.

Re: Electric fuel pump.

the reason is apparently the vro pump has quit working, the electric fuel pump is an explosion waiting to happen on an outboard motor. if the motor stalls,, the pump does not turn off immediately, if you forget to turn it off, it will continue to run, this could cause the carbs to run over, and the slightest spark, lighting a cigar, and BOOM. the reason for going to the 1982 set up, is the motor will run perfectly with those pumps, they are about $50 a piece, versus replaceing the VRO with the New OMS pump for $360.00.

if you change to the mercury, you will have to change the controls, and wiring harnesses. seems easier to mount 2 fuel plugs,(4 screws) and connect a couple of fuel lines. and have it done correctly, and safely.

the reason you need 2 pumps, is the motor requires more gas, one works as a lift pump, the other pressurizes the fuel to be distributed thru the carbs.

Re: Electric fuel pump.

My engine does not even have a VRO pump on it part # 0174257 no brackets or anything. and the vacuum is not hooked up. Now is the 1982 hard to hook up? Looks like it will cost me about $200.00 to install two pumps Right. Danny:confused:
