Whirlpool dryer won't get hot. Nothing fancy about the dryer, timer and push to start button. It will come on and run, just won't heat, at all. Is there a safety switch, relay, or would it be the heating element?

BTW, I had to replace the timer a few months back.

Re: Dryer Questions

Perhaps it's the hot surface ignitor...old days it was the thermocouple. Simple install, remove screw or clip, unplug connecting wires, reverse to install. The igniter will glow bright orange when starting, no orange glow, ignitor is suspect. All the above assumes a gas dryer.....

Re: Dryer Questions

I think he has an electric dryer Xcusme. There are some relays that could be bad,but my money is on the heating element.Pricey little muthus too.I replaced the element on our whirlpool about three years ago.The original was 8 years old.Not cleaning the lint filter before every load will shorten its life. Not to mention a fire hazzard.

I would go for a heating element. I have replaced a few and they are simple not to mention that you can move all the bust bunnies out at the same time.

9 out of 10 Docters prefer a new element...

Be sure you have 220 getting to the dryer you wont be the first person that had 110 to spin the drum and NO 220 for the heat :)

if you find a break in the element you could repair it with a unsulated spade terminal just squezz tight

Re: Electric Dryer Questions

Sometimes the hi-limit will open up and not allow the elements to heat. If both the elements and hi-limit check okay, then move onto the contactor/relay that energizes the elements. You said you changed the timer. Check the plug on the timer to make sure a pin didn't get bent or a bad connection keeping the control voltage from energizing the contactor/relay.

Also it wouldn't hurt to make sure all the lugs on the lines coming in from the breaker to the dryer (including the lugs inside the dryer) are tight and not corroded or burnt off. Electric current has a very hard time passing through resistance. Good Luck.

BTW please make sure you have the power shut off on the lines before doing any work.

Mack sure the exhaust duct is not plugged on has been crushed. Take the back off of the dryer. Turn it on and watch the heating element. If it comes on and stays on with the back off you have one of two problems. First the duct is plugged or the safety switch is going bad. The high temp safety switch will not overheat with the back off. Good luck

Re: Electric Dryer Questions

You can do a continuity test on the element fairly easy so you can tell if it is "open" or not. If there is no continuity then it is the element and if there is it will something different.

Neither one will hold. Bend the ends into a small ring then connect them with a nut and bolt. Just make certain nothing touches the case or the coil next to it.

Solder will just melt out, the small screw and nut to join the two will work. As for a splice,,,,,,,you would need to find one that is rated for high temps that has a high nickle content. Other alloy terminals will heat up and loose their tensil strength and let go.

If it was mine, I would just fork out the bucks for a new one and then I wouldn't have to listen to the mrs saying "You can't fix anything right can you?"
