The Scotties are my choice, I fished manual Penns for a lot of years and they are good. The Scotties are fast retrieving the weight and bullet proof.

I have a cannon electric that I have used in salt water for the last ten years. It has been a great one for me and you can buy extra weights or spring clips at most tackle supply stores here in the north east.

I have two -manual- cannons for my pro-v and havn't had a problem.
Four electric Big Jon's on the Lake Michigan rig that I wouldn't part with at all.I'd look into them.

Scotty downriggers[ made here on Vancouver Island] haveabout 98% of the market share- and the electric model has basically taken over. All you have to do is go winter spring[ chinook] fishing, generally right on the bottom] to send you to the marine store for the electric model

Re: Electric downriggers

I have owned scotty years ago, when it was illegal
to use electric down riggers unless you had a
medical problem. The ones I had were manual, they
went when I sold the boat they were mounted to.
I have been using Bigjon for the last 15 or so years, Captain packs they call them. I like them
very much.
It was unlawful to use electric down riggers on
the pacific west coast a number of years ago
unless you had a medical reason.

Re: Electric downriggers

almost everybody uses Scotty electric downriggers on the west coast now- sure beats cranking up a 15 lead ball every 15 minutes or so- and sometimes more often than that. That old medical rule went by the board years ago.
