Merc 5.0 1999 TBV ignition.

Engine cranks, starts momentarily then shuts down. This engine ran 30 minutes last week after putting fresh fuel. Now I notice that the choke butterflies do not move or close when starting. What's with this?

Re: Electric choke not closing

Don't take this wrong, but is this your first carburated engine?
From the sounds of some of your posts, you may not know how to start an engine with a carb. Especially if the choke doesn't work.
You also don't seem to understand how a choke works.
The choke is spring loaded closed (when cold) and the electric coil warms it and makes it open.
If it doesn't closed, is the choke plate stuck, is the choke coil adjusted properly????????

Re: Electric choke not closing

I have not worked on any carb, that's why I'm here looking for help rather than go to a mechanic everytime there's a problem and get ripped off. I'd be broke, sell the boat, then just buy a motorcycle. And I know how to start a carbed engine. You taught me last year, if you remember,Don.

The choke does not close anymore. It was closing before when starting. Now it doesn't. It is not stuck. It swings freely. What's up with this? It ran well last week after we spent 100 posts on the thread, and now there's another problem. Can't take boat to a mechanic for timing job (missing TDC decal - another problem) if it won't start.

Re: Electric choke not closing

I checked for voltage a few days ago with a voltmeter. It was fine. The engine ran 30 minutes. I can check again tomorrow morning. Can you please help me here? When this thing is up and going, compression test is next. I just bought a gauge today at Sears.

Re: Electric choke not closing

What model of carb do you have? On a cold start the choke should close(activate) after you acclerate the engine in nuetral pre start. Most carbs have a choke pull off ( a vacuum diaphram that couter acts the choke coil) sounds like your choke coil is mis adjusted or stuck. An electric choke consists of a by metalic spring that is made of two different metals. As it cools the metals contract and close the choke. After start the alt feeds voltage to the choke coil and warms it thus expanding the choke coil and opening the restricter plate. The reason I just put all that hi tech crap in there is ....
metals wear down ...ADJ ur CHoKe Every Once In a While

I removed the throttle cable a few days to verify if there were 2 streams of fuel squirting when you manually advance the throttle. The problem has to be started by this. I'll also check the choke setting with regard to the index marks. Plus recheck the idle adjsutment screw.

just loosen the little screw that holds the plastic cap in place. youll see little lines on the carb. one way its + the other way its - turn till its closed when cold. open when hot :)

The choke is 2 index from center, clockwise.

I adjusted the idle screw and the engine ran for 10 minutes. Thanks for your patience.
