I was given a 1975 Galaxy with a 1975 85HP Johnson, refently. Boat Floats, motor runs. I have tinkered a little with the motor, mostly changing the lower unit oil, greasing wherever the owners manual says to grease. The motor seems to run pretty well.

The only thing left to repair is the Auto Choke. To Choke the motor, I have to pull the cover and use the manual choke.

A toggle switch is located on the Johnson Command Center and I pulled the lower cover last night. However, to get to the toggle switch I may need to pull the JCS off of the mounting. This may be difficult since it is difficult to get to the bolts and they feel pretty rusty (mostly saltwater use).

Any suggestions on best approach to check for problems?

Hey Ace,
To isolate the problem, bypass the toggle switch to see if the solonoid then activates the choke. If it works, the switch is the culprit; if not, the solonoid is probably at fault. Of course, ensure all electrical connections involved are thoroughly cleaned. Good luck, always nice to get a free boat/motor that runs.
Backlash

BackLash:

Thanks for the quick reply. This was suggested by a friend in the office.

Can I just basically run a couple of wires from the battery to the solonoid? Any particular kind of wire?

thanks again...

If you have one, a remote starter switch would work just fine. If not, a jumper wire of the same gauge as the hot wire to the solonoid will do.
Backlash

I am just the opposite, I have been pulling up, but have not tried to push down. I suspect it won't go down, but thanks for the advice.
