My trailer has no brakes right now,but since I haul a 19 foot Starcraft Islander I must put some brakes on it.
The spindles are high speed spindles with a 5200 pound rating. The inside diameter is 1.25 inch and the outside is 0.75 inch. The bearing sizes are LM67048 and LM11949. the hole size is 5-4.50. My thought is that I need 10 inch drums for these brakes
So far I have had very little success in locating electric brakes with drums that double as hubs for this obviously fairly special size.
Is it possible to use automotive drums and just use the original hubs with longer studs? Or should I continue looking for special trailer drums?
Thanks,Cornelis.

If it were me I would measure the length of my axle and get prices for a new one with brakes & hubs. It might be worth spending a little extra to save a lot of hassle...and it might not.

You cannot use auto style drums as they do not have the machined surface for the brake puck to work against.

I would use 12x2 brakes if they can be found.

Ayuh,... Is there a backin' plate flange on the axle to bolt the backin' plate on too,..??

If so,... Somebody makes brakes for it...

If not,... I agree with the above comment,.. Replace the whole axle, with brakes already on it...

Another good website I use is ChampionTrailers.com. They have FAQ's for just about any subject. They also sell brake kits at reasonable prices. You'd need square flanges welded to the end of your axles for something to mount the brakes on. Surge brakes are preferable on boats of your size.

Under NY DMV Regulations 79.22, your boat trailer is considered a "light trailer" by the State of NY, and brakes are not required on trailers less than 10K GVW. They're supposed to be inspected, but emphasis is only placed on the structure of the hitch--and brakes tested if so equipped. See http://www.dmv.ny.gov/forms/cr79.pdf

Just be sure you use an adequate tow vehicle--preferably a 1/2 ton or larger truck--that has adequate braking power.

Nope:
Trailers weighing over 1,000 pounds unladen, and trailers having a maximum gross weight in excess of
3,000 pounds, must be equipped with brakes.

Here is the relevant DMV document: MV529c

Re: Electric brakes for a high speed spindle.

Thanks for all the answers. Although my trailer is below 1000 pounds,I cannot afford a truck to tow and I do my towing with a Grand Caravan. It has enough power to tow,but not enough brake capacity for emergency situations and the brakes are not built to deal with the extra 2000 pounds pushing from behind.Hence my decision to add brakes to the trailer. I'll do some more searching and if I can't find the proper brakes I'll change the axle.

Brakes are a must with that setup, IMO. The brakes on your minivan are marginal for the vehicle itself.

New axle with electric brakes is ordered.
