I have a 1972 chris craft commander that I picked up super cheap. The boat was repowered with mercruiser 454s The last thing I need to do with the boat is wiring the new harness into the old harness. I have no diagrams from the old harness and none for the new harness on the engines. Im no electral guru but I have a basic knowlage of electrial. Also what exactly is a slave solenoid for? If you have a solenoild on the starter why do you have another one? If anyone knows where I could get a wiring diagram for the boat and one for the new harness im sure I could get this bad boy going... Thanks guys and gals

Re: Electrial Help

don't know where you are going to find a wiring diagram for the boat

you will find a wiring diagram for the engine in the OEM manual for that particular engine, you can get a link to download one for free in the must have info sticky under merc info

as far as connecting the wires, you will more than likely have to figure out which wire from the dash does what and connect correctly into the engine harness, or rewire the boat with properly color coded wires

the slave solenoid allows for smaller guage wires to be used at the helm switch to control larger current (amperage) from a remote location

you may need to upgrade to electronic tachomters, some of the old chris's used rotary style tachs that ran off the distributor shaft

Re: Electrial Help

Unlikely you will find a worthwhile wiring diagram. Just trace wires and label them. Dont take out any wire that your not sure what it does. Do a google on marine wire color code. If you dont find something email me I have it. The key switch will not last long if it picks up the load of the starter solenoid. The slave requires less current. Do a few searchs in this forum. Read some of silvertips posts and stickies.
