My brother just installed a eld 1409 carb on a 350 and it just wont run right. It runs fine WOT and idle but around 1400-1500 rpm it seems to bog and try to stall out if you hold the thottle there. I pulled the carb and cleaned it and re jet the thing. I tried to lean it out but it still does it. I have a jet kit so i can do what ever. It also seems to just drip gas out if you hold it around 1500. Should it be a spray and not a drip [ fine wot] .

Anyone know what this could be.

carbs atomize fuel, at any rpm, it shouldn't be dripping at all.

Seems the float is set too high or needle and seat are bad.

Yea take the air horn off and make sure the floats are set exactly per the manual. I believe it's 7/16" from end of float to air horn gasket (with the air horn upside down).

The manual says to use a 7/16" drill bit.

Check your fuel pressure sounds like its to high. Edelbrock/Weber carbs are very picky about the inlet pressure. (should not exceed 7 psi) You should not be able to see any gas in the carb unless its being squirted by the accelerator pump.

My brother just installed a eld 1409 carb on a 350 and it just wont run right.

To start, I would ask WHY the carb was replaced to begin with? What happened to the previous carb. Assuming it got all plugged up with water and corrosion, was the problem with the fuel taken care of before the new carb was run? Do you have a water seperating fuel filter on the boat? Was it changed and the old filter checked for water and contamination?

i took it apart and checked it all out and it seems to be fine. I set the floats to 7/16 like it said also. Fuel pressure was 5.5psi. Changed the carb because it was just old and didnt want to rebuild it. Thing runs fine all the way up to 4000 rpm. Just bogs bad when its around 1400 rpm.

He bought the thing off ebay [ rebuilt] well the thing was never rebuilt. I found 4 problems with the thing and fixed it. Thought it would have worked better but nope.

That's the approximate crossover point from the idle circuit to the main metering circuit. It's probably TOO lean at this point in the fuel flow curve. Maybe richen the idle mixture for starters.

what do you have in it for jets, metering rods and springs. It could well be you've got the wrong springs in it for the engine you're running (it's based on engtine vacuum), those carbs are fairly simple to tune right, but you have to be meticulous about it and make sure everything is right on.

Will it idle fine even after running a bit? If so, then it is less likely to be the fuel pressure, usually if that's the problem, then it's worse after you idle down from running.

Post what you've got in it for the current and we'll see... If I'm not mistalen (this is from memory!), a near stock 350 with that carb will be close with orange springs, 7147 metering rods and 98 main jets... I believe they're now supplied with 98 primaries, 101 secondaries and 6847 metering rods, orange springs).

Let us know where you're at now... I'm betting that a change of either the spring or some combination of metering rod and primary jet will be the trick...

imho...

either way, good luck with it.
