Eight foot sturgeon caught on Sacramento River!

I headed again this week to the delta for another few days of chasing sturgeon. My first day was a skunk near Decker Island, but a boat nearby had to raise anchor to drift with a huge eight footer to get him to the boat - and away from the damn furbag who tried to steal him. They managed to boat him and move him back downriver to save him from the sea lion - and I caught a great photo of him as they released him.

On the second day I cruised down to Suisun Bay for a glorious day of calm water and sunshine - but no sturgeon action.

Day three, back at Decker Island near Rio vista, I managed to reel in a 46 incher that I chose to release for another day.

I stayed at Delta Marina and RV Park in Rio Vista, a very nice place to spend nights in the coach and days on the water. Keeping the boat at the dock sure makes heading out each day a pleasure.

Fishwisher!

Great to read your stories. I followed your stories back when you had writtten a lot of articles on the California Delta fish report. So did you sell your C-Dory?

I fished down by the power lines for the past two days, and had one break off...bit my striper rod, that had sardine on the hook. unfortunately, I had low test mona as my leader..that will learn me!

Off the subject, I'm in the market for a 5" color GPS, sono, chartplotter. I here thre is some conflicting reports of the Lowrance HDS, and the Garmin 545s was just discontinued. Any idea what would be ideal for the delta, with an occasional trip to Bodega for cod? I would say that 90% of my fishing is in the Delta for stripers, and sturgeon if I can get one.
I just want to be able to get back into some areas aroud the Delta, and find my way back.

I bought a handheld Garmin Oregon 400c, but did not like the touch screen. I just bought a Crestliner Eagle 24.5, that has a hard-top, so not sure if I need an externally mounted antena. My current electronics are a Lowrance LMS 350-A, but it does not have any base maps installed, and the "track back' function is lousy. My boat has an olod school furuno radar, but I'm getting ready to take that off...need a college course just trying to figure it out...color is the way to go

Any thoughts, or preferences?

Keep chasing those sturge

BigFish,

A fellow on the FishSniffer caught a nice sturgeon with 'chovie or sardine, too, just yesterday. And he also said it was on his striper rig!

I have a Humminbird (757 I believe) with color GPS, chartplotter, etc. It has a very easy and clear route save program that I use regularly. Before shutting down you can just punch a button, and that route appears automatically whenever you are on that same area. I bought the western lake chip from Navionics which included the Delta. I like this unit and the SD card.

Yep, due to dementia I sold my C-Dory. I've regretted it ever since. But I also am very happy with the North River. It was a very expensive mistake!

I just began writing for the CalDelta site again. I'll do reports whenever I fish the delta.

Hope this helps.

COACHPOTATO,

Sold your C-Dory do to dementia..what? I realy like that boat, I realy like d the pilot house. Yeah, those sturgeon hit a lot of different baits, which is realy nice.

So sounds like you really like the Hummingbird. I fish the Delta mostly, with ocasional trip up to Point Reyes for rock fish.....I just want a nice unit that has the chartography, GPS, and fishfinder. Did you compare the H-Bird to Garmin, and Lowrance before deciding on the H-bird?

Anyway, hope to see you out in the Delta. Sturgeon Derby next month, i keep boat at Delta Marina, in Rio Vista. I really have not fished beyond the "power Lines" so maybe one day you can give me an idea in Suison to start targeting Sturgeon??

Crestliner walk-around, wave sometime if you are out on the water...direct me to some fish, and I will buy drinks a the Point.

Today:

After a couple catfish caught and released, I swung into a manatee sized one this morning. On the third try at getting the big hook past a barb, the (used well) knot let go. It was big, but I didn't get to see it so that's my story!

Then I went on to get a 2 footer to pet before running out of bait.
