Hello, I am a new member of the iBoats forum and this is my first post, so I will apologize now for any mistakes I make in posting.

A buddy and I have been discussing various engine configurations for a sailboat to cruise the Caribbean. We decided that a new (or nearly new) outboard (Tohatsu being a strong contender) would offer certain advantages, but are unsure whether EFI or carbureted is the best way to go.

On the one hand, we could probably work on a carburetor, but we are less comfortable working on an EFI system. On the other hand, EFI is rumored to be more reliable. Does anyone have any idea how likely we are to need to work on either system? Is either one more prone to failure than the other?

Thanks in advance for any feedback.

Re: EFI vs Carbureted

Carbureted is simple to repair. Carburetored needs more repair.

EFI is complex. Not as likely to need adjustments.
