We were planning on spending 2 days on the Hudson river fri and sat. But in going over the river in Albany today 1.5 hrs North of Newburg . . . The river looks like it's very muddy from the storm runoff. it's still several days away but does anyone know if boating in muddy waters can damage something like the cooling system or impeller etc.

if so, i might go to lake george or champlain instead rather than risk motor damage. Weather looks to be sunnier in southern NY this weekend.

Thx

Thx Roscoe. I'm sure it will be even less muddy in a few more days.

Muddy water won't hurt it, I boat in muddy water probably 99% of the time.

Won't hurt to flush the motor afterwards. If the motor has a hose fitting, hook it up; otherwise, use the rabbit ears on the intakes, turn the faucet on half-way (full pressure could damage the water lines in the motor), make sure water is running out and/or through the motor. Start the motor and let it idle with the water pumping through it - let it do this for five minutes to give the t-stat time to open up so all water passages will be flushed. Then shut the motor off and then shut the water off.

Safety: Merc says to remove prop when you do this so that someone doesn't inadvertantly hit the throttle and tear someone's arm/leg off.

Never run the motor with no water. 20 seconds is all it takes to ruin the impeller.

Lawsuits tend to encourage that language effect:)

We used to boat in the Sacramento Delta every weekend. It's tidel controled (So, it's always moving) and a silty bottom m(So, you can only see about 5-7 inches down). Never had a problem with the engine heating up or getting clogged up.
